Introduction

When it comes to critical infrastructure, utility substations are among the most important. Keeping these facilities protected so they can continue to provide residents with power is stressful enough, but doing so at an effective and efficient level is quite the challenge.

This article explores the challenges an undisclosed utility substation was experiencing and why they trusted IronSite to establish an effective perimeter security strategy to achieve peace of mind.

Overview

Undisclosed location–it’s no secret that attacks on utilities and substations have risen over recent years, striking a rise in concern within the security and infrastructure sectors. Seeking to disrupt key services and cause panic, critical components of the power grid are prime targets for malicious actors and criminals.

The need for a proactive and all-encompassing perimeter security strategy has never been higher, with both physical and cyber threats exposing vulnerabilities for utility substations that have drastic implications if breached.

IronSite understands the severity of keeping utilities protected, which is why we jumped at the opportunity to help this state’s largest power provider. Through months of planning and execution, we delivered a turnkey security solution that addressed the challenges facing this utility substation.

For utility providers, substations are mission-critical assets. Any disruption, whether from vandalism, theft, or targeted attacks, can impact service reliability, public safety, and regulatory compliance. With increased threats to energy infrastructure nationwide, this substation required a proactive security strategy that could withstand both environmental and human risks.

Why IronSite?

The utility selected IronSite for its proven experience securing critical infrastructure in complex environments. IronSite’s ability to plan across difficult terrain, coordinate specialized excavation partners, and deliver a turnkey perimeter security solution made it the right fit for a project where precision, safety, and reliability were non-negotiable.

Challenges

When it comes to challenges, each project is largely dependent on what they’re trying to do and how they’re going to do it. Excavation, location, degree of difficulty, etc., all heavily influence the success or failure of a security project. For this project specifically, some of the challenges IronSite ran into were:

  • Grade: The fluctuating grades created logistical hurdles that could have compromised fence integrity if not properly planned. IronSite’s approach ensured consistent security coverage across mountainsides, cliffs, and uneven terrain.

  • Rock excavation: Excavating through dense rock formations posed both schedule and safety risks, requiring specialized equipment and skilled operators.

  • Location: The remote site increased transportation complexity and limited communication access, making proactive planning and coordination essential.

  • Skilled workforce: A project of this complexity demanded highly trained crews to maintain safety standards and installation quality.

Solution

When it came to addressing the terrain grade, IronSite continuously assessed and graded the more challenging sections of the substation site. To ensure a smoother installation process, we frequently made accommodations for the adjustments in terrain.

We worked with Inland Foundation Specialists on the rock excavation, resources, and manpower. Due to them being efficiently re-allocated, we were able to address multiple challenging scopes at the same time while maximizing the progress of the project.

Regarding the location of the substation, we meticulously pre-planned as many activities as possible and aimed to maintain a proactive planning approach, making navigating the challenges of the remote site location easier. We strived to stay several weeks ahead of schedule so any potential setbacks didn’t jeopardize the timeline of the project.

The results

The project was completed without disruption to ongoing utility operations and delivered a fully integrated perimeter security system designed for long-term performance in a challenging environment.

IronSite fortified the substation perimeter with anti-climb fencing, anti-dig fencing, security cameras, detection radars, and gates. This resulted in enhanced protection from malicious actions, strengthening the overall security posture and providing peace of mind.

The proactive measures put in by IronSite not only act as advanced deterrents, but they also enable swift detection and response to potential security threats–ensuring a continued reliability of the critical services this utility substation provides.
